Palatine man gets 13 years for sexual assault
A 45-year-old Palatine man pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a teenage girl and was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Candido Chavez-Barreto also pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography. Cook County Judge Thomas Fecarotta sentenced Chavez-Barreto to three years in prison in exchange for his guilty plea on the child pornography charge.
Fecarrota ordered the sentences to be served consecutively, court records show.
Chavez-Barreto must complete at least 85 percent of the sentence before he is eligible for parole.
Police arrested Chavez-Barreto after a relative of the victim found the defendant’s cellphone, which contained images of the defendant and the girl engaged in sexual activities, said a spokeswoman from the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. The victim later told counselors at the Children’s Advocacy Center of North and Northwest Cook County that she and Chavez-Barreto engaged in sexual activities from April 2011 to February 2012 and that he used his cellphone to videotape their encounters.
While his case was pending, Chavez-Barreto wrote a letter to the victim’s family apologizing and asking for forgiveness, prosecutors said.
Chavez-Barreto received credit for 570 days in custody and was ordered to pay $2,109 in fines.
