Inmate accidentally released, put on bus to Chicago

VIENNA, Ill. — An inmate of Vienna Correctional Center in southern Illinois has been accidentally released by the Illinois Department of Corrections.

WILY-AM in Centralia reported that officers have been dispatched to apprehend 38-year-old Michael Sanders. Authorities say Sanders was released Friday when officials miscalculated his parole date and put him on a bus to Chicago.

Corrections Department spokesman Tom Shaer says Sanders was convicted in 2010 of arson, was paroled and reoffended in 2012 when he was found in possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to 38 months on the controlled substance conviction and served enough time to be paroled. However, he hadn’t completed the remainder of the first sentence, which was required because of the parole violation.

Shaer calls the release of Sanders a “rare miscalculation.”
