Arlington Heights firefighters take on Chicago Wheelchair Bulls

Arlington Heights firefighters will play basketball in wheelchairs this weekend as part of an annual fundraiser to help provide athletic opportunities to disabled citizens. The firefighters will take on the Chicago Wheelchair Bulls at the 5th annual basketball exhibition game and fundraiser, organizer Seth Goldberg said. The event takes place at 7 p.m. Saturday at Saint Viator High School, 1213 E. Oakton St. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are now available and cost $6 for adults and students and $5 for children 12 and under. “Saint Viator has been bending over backward for us, I have to say a big thank you for what they’re doing because they’ve got the whole school involved,” said Goldberg, a member of the Wheelchair Bulls. Over the past four years the event has raised more than $18,000 to help the Wheelchair Bulls travel to tournaments and put on programs allowing younger disabled kids to play basketball, Goldberg said. “We’re excited to celebrate five years, it’s really a milestone for this event,” he added. Goldberg, who serves on Arlington Heights’ commission for citizens with disabilities, said his team usually beats the firefighters, but people can help their favorite squad’s chances by donating money during the event, which will translate into points on the scoreboard. “I know I’ve enjoyed the event over the last few years, it’s a very fun evening,” said Village President Tom Hayes, who will speak at the event. “We appreciate (the Wheelchair Bulls) and all they do for citizens with disabilities, and we appreciate the involvement of our firefighters. I’m looking forward to it.”

Goldberg said the fundraiser is a fun event with a serious purpose.

“The mission of the Chicago Wheelchair Bulls is to build awareness of the importance of wheelchair sports programs in all Chicago-area communities,” he said.
