Illini backup QB named Big Ten freshman of week

Illinois backup quarterback Aaron Bailey’s big afternoon against Miami of Ohio has made him the Big Ten’s freshman of the week.

The conference gave Bailey his first conference honor on Monday.

Bailey had 56 yards rushing and a touchdown in Illinois’ 50-14 win over the Redhawks on Saturday. The fourth-quarter touchdown run was Bailey’s third score of the season.

He has played in all four games so far but primarily as a ball carrier. But he also had his first completion Saturday.

Bailey is the third Illini player honored by the Big Ten this season. The others were starting quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase and punter Justin DuVernois.

Armstrong likely starter against Illini if Martinez is out
