Counselor at youth center accused of having sex with detainee

By Harry Hitzeman

A former substance abuse counselor at the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles faces misconduct charges on allegations she had sex with a male juvenile detainee several times from October 2012 through April 2013, according to court records.

Alexa M. Rubin, 25, of the 800 block of Pontiac Count, Aurora, turned herself in last week after being indicted by a Kane County grand jury and is free after posting $2,500 bond, Kane County Sheriff's Department Lt. Pat Gengler said.

Gengler said the sheriff's office did not conduct the investigation and he could not comment further.

According to court records, the four felony counts of custodial misconduct accuse Rubin of having sex with a male detainee at the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles on Oct. 12, 2012, and in February and April this year. The charges specify that Rubin is an "employee of the penal system."

A call placed with Michael Steward, superintendent of the St. Charles medium security facility for juvenile offenders, was referred to the state's Department of Juvenile Justice.

According to the state's Department of Juvenile Justice, Rubin began work about 2 years ago at the department as a contracted substance abuse counselor.

Rubin resigned from her $38,000 yearly position in June, the department said.

According to Kane County and McHenry County court records, Rubin's only other previous offense was for speeding in 2007.

Rubin's next court date was not immediately available. She faces up to five years in prison if convicted, but probation also is an option.
