Woman challenges Indiana on female veteran issues

INDIANAPOLIS — A disabled Air Force veteran is questioning Indiana's commitment to help women who've served in the military.

Lisa Wilken tells The Journal Gazette that an annual conference for women veterans has been canceled and says the state's efforts to hold events for women at an October health expo are inadequate.

She's also upset that the state hasn't filled a position for a coordinator dedicated to female veterans.

Department of Veterans Affairs Director James Brown initially told Wilken there was no money for the conference because its budget had reverted to the general fund.

Wilken later determined that the account still existed and contained almost $7,000.

Brown says he doesn't oppose a conference and plans to appoint a transitional women's coordinator.
