Illinois AG's office to review theft of chief's gun

CARBONDALE — A special prosecutor will examine the theft of a southern Illinois police chief's gun that that was used in a 2009 shooting death.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinois reports a Jackson County judge has signed off on having a prosecutor with the Illinois attorney general's office review the case.

Authorities say the gun taken from Carbondale Police Chief Jody O'Guinn's car in 2009 was used months later in the death of Deaunta (dee-AWN'-tuh) Spencer of Carbondale.

Witnesses have said Matthew Jones shot Spencer in the back after Spencer tried to punch him. Authorities say they found what they believe to be the murder weapon blocks from the scene.

Jones later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced last year to 35 years in prison.
