5K walk/run takes place at St. James Farm in Warrenville

The DuPage County Forest Preserve District invites competitive 5K runners, outdoor explorers and fans of DuPage history to join the inaugural “St. Jimmy Shimmy 5K Walk/Run” at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at St. James Farm Forest Preserve on Winfield Road, one block north of Naperville Road, in Warrenville.

Competitors in the chip-timed 5K will experience a new trail-style course that takes a hilly path through woodlands and meadows and passes the signature Kremlin-yellow buildings of the farm.

Kids ages 13 and younger will have a chance to tackle a mini-steeplechase run that includes fun obstacles, and all ages can join a one-mile guided hike that highlights the history of St. James Farm.

Registration for all three events of the “St. Jimmy Shimmy” is available at itsracetime.com. Late registration is available through Sept. 27 and is $35 for ages 14 and older and $15 for ages 13 and younger. Same-day registration will be at the event from 4 and 4:40 p.m. Sept. 28 and is $40 for ages 14 and older and $20 for ages 13 and younger.

There will be a free raffle, healthy post-race refreshments and an equine demonstration for all participants. For runners in the 5K, there also will be awards for the top three male and top three female finishers in nine different age groups, plus the top three overall male and female runners.

Proceeds from the event will support preservation efforts at St. James Farm Forest Preserve. For more details on the “St. Jimmy Shimmy 5K Walk/Run,” contact dupageforest.org or (630) 876-5931.
