Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra opens its 37th season with fall concert

The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra begins its 37th season with a concert Saturday, Oct. 5. The orchestra's "Fall Concert: The Chamber Effect" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. There will be a free preconcert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in Room 173.
The concert program features Five Variants of "Dives and Lazarus," by Ralph Vaughan Williams; "Symphonia Concertante" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with Mathias Tacke on violin and Ann Montzka-Smelser on viola; Serenade for Strings, Op. 20, by Edward Elgar; and "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland. This concert is supported in part by the Kishwaukee Symphony Associates.
All of this season's concerts, except the Children's Concert, will be held in Boutell Memorial Concert Hall at NIU.
The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra will present its annual free concert of music with a Halloween theme appropriate for children and adults, at 5:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30. Children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes and may trick-or-treat at 5 p.m. inside the Music Building until the first concert begins.
Each year, the KSO presents a concert not open to the general public that is specifically for third, fourth and fifth grade students and their teachers from elementary schools in our region. The Children's Concert will be held Nov. 15, at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb. Schools in the area may inquire about attending this concert by contacting the orchestra. This concert is supported in part by the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation.
The orchestra performs music of the holiday season at its Holiday Pops Concert, "Winter Wonderland" at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13. Many holiday favorites, including Haydn's "Toy Symphony" and a seasonal sing-along, are part of this traditional family concert.
The KSO's Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition Winner Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22. There will be a free preconcert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in Room 173. In addition to the winner's concerto, this concert will feature "La Forza Del Destino: Overture," by Giuseppe Verdi; and Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, "From the New World," by Antonín Dvorak. This concert is supported in part by the Mary E. Stevens Concert Trust and by WNIU/WNIJ.
On Saturday, May 3, the KSO will perform its spring concert, "Shostakovich and Steel" at 7:30 p.m. There will be a free preconcert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in Room 173. The concert will include selections by the Northern Illinois University Steel Band and Symphony No. 10, by Dmitri Shostakovich. This concert is supported in part by the Ideal Industries Foundation with a generous gift from Jean Juday.
Changes in programs, dates, times, and location of concerts will be posted on the orchestra's website.
Tickets go on sale 30 minutes prior to each concert. All seats are general admission (no reserved seating). Individual ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors 62 and over, $10 for students, and $5 for children under 12. Season tickets can be purchased at special prices for the four regular concerts of the season. Season ticket prices are $50 for adults, $35 for seniors, $35 for students, and $18 for children under 12.
