Math club marks 100 years Friday in Des Plaines

The Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago will kick off the group’s 100th anniversary at the Fountain Blue in Des Plaines Friday, Sept. 20. The guest speaker is Steve Leinwand, author of “Sensible Mathematics: A Guide for School Leaders in the Era of Common Core Standards.”

Elgin Area Unit District 46 mathematics coordinator Kevin Wiland will serve as the club president through 2014. More than 400 active members, including several U-46 teachers, are part of the professional organization of mathematics teachers.

“We bring in nationally renowned speakers to speak about math education, Common Core implementation and technology,” Wiland said in a news release. The club meets eight times throughout the school year and hosts two workshops each year.
