Boomers vying for championship in sophomore year

Congratulations to the Schaumburg Boomers, who in only their second year are closing in on their playful promise to deliver fans a Frontier League Championship within their first century.

The Boomers’ West Division playoff series victory over the Florence Freedom this week came just after the Frontier League honored the franchise as its Organization of the Year and named skipper Jamie Bennett as its Manager of the Year.

The league’s championship series, against either the Lake Erie Crushers or Traverse City Beach Bums, will start at Boomers Stadium this weekend with a 6 p.m. Saturday game and 5 p.m. Sunday game.

If needed, a fifth and final game will be played in Schaumburg at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, but the Boomers are undoubtedly intending to clinch the series on the road.

The team’s season record is 62-37, with exactly as many wins at home as on the road. The Boomers have lost 22 games at home this year and 15 away.

The team already is selling $18 Western Division Champions T-shirts at its website, boomersbaseball.com.
