St. Viator picks up road victory

Junior Grace Fedus (6 kills), senior Megan Mueller (5 kills) and senior Mary Cleary (3) led the attack for the St. Viator girls volleyball team, which defeated Resurrection 25-14, 25-17 in a nonconference match on Wednesday in Chicago.

Senior Jenny Brandt and senior Molly Ziegler (9 assists, 4 aces, 5 digs) each added 2 kills for the Lions (5-3), who have won three in a row.

Junior Kaitlin O'Brien collected 5 assists while sophomore Ellie Meyer and Mueller led the back row with 15 digs apiece. Cleary and teammate Lauren Mroz each had 2 blocks.

Leyden d. Streamwood: Senior middle hitter Carly O'Kray served for 14 points and 6 saves along with 5 blocks as Leyden won the nonconference match 25-22, 25-9.

Maine West d. Maine South: Allison Grzebien put down 13 kills while Magda Czerlonko added 4 as the Warriors (6-2) won the Central Suburban League crossover 26-24, 11-25, 26-24 in Park Ridge.

Brittany Collins and Alyssa Suriano each added 2 kills for West while setter Kassidy Riportella collected 25 assists, 10 service points and a kill.

“I'm happy with the determination we showed in Sets 1 and 3,” said Warriors veteran coach Randy Tiller. “But I don't know where the energy went in Set 2. I think they just like playing three set matches. “Kassidy Riportella showed great leadership and calm under pressure. Allison Grzebien had another outstanding performance (13 of the team's 26 kills). Maine South passed well and hit well and we had a tough time with their setter/middle hitter. I'm glad we only play them once a season.”
