Boomers take commanding 2-0 series lead

The West Division champion Schaumburg Boomers took a commanding 2-0 series lead with a 6-2 home victory over the Florence Freedom in Game 2 of the Frontier League divisional playoffs Sunday night.

Alexi Colon drilled a 2-run homer in the bottom of the second to hand Schaumburg an early 2-0 lead. Florence battled back to even the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth.

The Boomers regained the lead with 3 seventh-inning runs. Sean Mahley and Steve McQuail posted back-to-back singles to set up a sacrifice bunt from Brian McConkey to hand Schaumburg the advantage.

Frank Pfister followed with a 2-run triple to finish the rally. Pfister finished with 3 hits and has driven in 4 runs in the first two games of the series. Mahley also registered 3 hits in the win as the Boomers collected 12 total.

Shawn Sanford started for the Boomers and allowed 2 runs in 513 innings but did not factor in the decision. Mike Giovenco earned the win, working 223 scoreless innings.

Dexter Price finished out the victory by striking out the side in the ninth.

The Boomers (59-37, 2-0) go for the series sweep Tuesday night on the road. Right-hander Seth Webster (6-1, 2.40) will start for the Boomers, with Florence sending righty Michael Oros (7-5, 2.16). First pitch is 5:35 p.m.
