Barrington High School grad faces murder charge in New York

A Barrington High School graduate is being held without bond in a New York jail after being charged with killing an 18-year-old Long Beach woman.

Maxwell Sherman, 18, of the 0 to 100 block of Louisiana Street in Long Beach, N.Y., is due to appear in court on Wednesday, Sept. 18, said Chris Munzing, deputy communications director for the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.

Munzing said Sherman was arraigned on the initial felony complaint of second-degree murder after his arrest Aug. 24, and a sealed grand jury indictment came down earlier this week.

Sheriff officials said the body of Lauren Daverin, 18, of Lynbrook, N.Y., was discovered on a footbridge between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road at 10 p.m. on Aug. 22.

“Two brothers came across the body on the footbridge,” Nassau County Police Detective Vincent Garcia said. “She was naked, brutally beaten and sexually assaulted.”

Garcia said Daverin’s head had been pounded into the pavement.

Daverin was pronounced dead at the scene. The autopsy was handled by the Nassau County medical examiner’s office. The case remains under investigation; however, media reports from New York said the woman was strangled.

Garcia said he could not comment as to whether Daverin was randomly targeted or whether she and Sherman knew one another. According to media reports, Daverin was married to an airman stationed at an Air Force base in Louisiana, but was in New York visiting her family. Friends told reporters she had been hanging out with them near the footbridge earlier in the evening.

Sherman was best described as a transient student at Barrington Unit District 220, spokesman Jeff Arnett said.

“It’s my understanding that the family had multiple residences out of state, New York being one of those,” Arnett said. “They relocated periodically.”

He said Sherman attended partial years at Arnett C. Lines Elementary School during second and third grade, attended a portion of his 8th-grade year at Barrington Middle School Station Campus, and attended Barrington High School for the fall semester of his senior year in 2012.

However, he said Sherman obtained enough transfer credits to receive a high school diploma from Barrington District 220 in January of 2013.

Sherman did not attend the school’s graduation ceremony in June, his name and picture do not appear in the school’s yearbook for 2013, and he was not a member of any extracurricular activities, Arnett said.

“This is truly an odd and troubling situation,” Arnett said. “It’s a real tragedy.”
