Chicago archdiocese sued over sex abuse

A former student is suing the Archdiocese of Chicago, claiming a convicted former priest molested him a decade ago.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the 20-year-old unnamed plaintiff filed the lawsuit Wednesday in Cook County circuit court. The plaintiff claims convicted pedophile Daniel McCormack abused him in 2003 and 2004. McCormack pleaded guilty in 2007 to abusing five children at St. Agatha Catholic Church. He was sentenced to five years in prison.

The archdiocese already has agreed to pay millions of dollars in settlements involving McCormack. The plaintiff claims the church knew McCormack had inappropriate contact with children but didn’t stop him. The archdiocese said in a statement Thursday that those allegations are false and it is investigating the lawsuit.

The plaintiff is seeking at least $150,000 in damages.
