Garden yields bounty thanks to school, fire district

The Palatine Rural Fire Protection District and School District #15 Marion Jordan School are beginning to reap the rewards of a partnership that began this past spring.

Principal Jenny Grosch, fifth/sixth-grade teacher Lindsey Harris and Chief Rich May spearheaded the community garden project. The Marion Jordan students, alongside district firefighters, prepared a 25-foot by 25-foot garden plot at the district’s fire station, at the corner of Ela and Palatine roads.

Students and firefighters have been sharing the responsibilities of weeding, watering and harvesting a variety of vegetables. The garden has produced cucumbers, squash, sweet peppers, carrots, broccoli and tomatoes. This fall, there should also be pumpkins for the picking.

For additional information on the garden project contact Captain Jeff Dill at jdill@prfpd.org.
