Hersey wins MSL title rematch

Led by junior Gabri Olhava (6 kills), junior Kelly Hill (5) and sophomore Liz Fuerst (3), defending Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball champion Hersey topped visiting Palatine 25-19, 26-24 in a rematch of last’s MSL title match at the Carter Gymnasium.

“It was good to get the win as Palatine really challenged us in Game 2,” said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. “They forced us to come from behind.”

Huskies junior setter Courtney Stedman (54-of-54) handed out 17 assists while senior libero Katie Krebs led the back row with 15 digs and classmate Carly Pisano added 8.

Megan Solans and Fuerst each had a pair of aces for the Huskies (1-2).

Palatine (0-1) received 4 kills apiece from senior Hannah Bridier and sophomore Heather Holz while senior Liz Keelty served 2 aces and collected 13 digs. Junior setter Caitlin Reidy set the offense with 13 assists.

Barrington d. Rolling Meadows: Barrington earned its first win of the season with a hard-fought 29-27, 25-20 victory over host Rolling Meadows in the MSL crossover.

Christy Roney (9 kills), Megan Talbot (5) and Emily Watkins (4) led the attack for the Fillies (1-2) while Katie Clement had 2 blocks and Claire Waliczek 1.

Waliczek directed the offense with 23 assists hole Emily Casaletto had a match-high 14 digs.

Roney also served 3 aces while Waliczek and Ellie Lauderback had 2 apiece.

Jenny Vliet (6 kills), Lauren Sokolowski (6 kills, 11 digs) and Ashley Montanez (4 kills) led the attack for Meadows (1-2). Vliet (6 assists) and Sami Kay (5 assists) set the offense.

Conant d. Wheeling: Conant senior Jenn Donnell put down a match-high 16 kills and classmate Drea Catalano added 6 as the visiting Cougars topped Wheeling 24-26, 25-22, 25-17 in the MSL crossover.

Sarah Manczko (4), Alissa Wachal (3) and Daniele Sortino (2) were top blockers for the Cougars (1-1), who received 15 assists from Sarah Mazurek and 9 from Elisa Ambrose.

Wheeling (0-2) was led on attack by Haley Singer (9 kills) and Elizabeth Smith (5) while Caitlyn Slussar led the back row with 15 digs followed by Sabrin Semeria (13), Singer (11) and Kristen Bogacz (10).

Buffalo Grove d. Fremd: Buffalo Grove improved to 3-4 as seniors Alaina Murphy and Sarah Rivera each put down 6 kills for the host Bison.

Junior setter Marie Georgoulis had 12 assists, 4 aces and 3 digs while Murphy and Katelyn Sommers each had 2 aces.

Fremd (1-1) was led by Hope Schroeder (5 kills), Ari Messner (3) and Carly Roberts (14). Amy Andersen collected 3 blocks and Jackie Mursuli served 3 aces.

Elk Grove d. Hoffman Estates: Junior middle hitter Amber Lindfors put down 6 kills and senior middle Taylor Socha added 3 as host Elk Grove won the MSL crossover 25-21, 25-21.

Melissa Solorio served 6 aces for the host Grens while Kerry Souder handed out 15 assists. Top diggers for EG (1-1) were Kelly Regan (8), Kelsey Conley (7) and Taylor Brown (6).

Hoffman Estates (0-2) was paced on attack by senior Clare Shaffer (6 kills) and junior Kaitlyn Imurgia (2). Seniors Renee Clemment (7 assists) and Jenny Avila (5) ran the Hawks’ offense.

Leyden d. Vernon Hills: Leyden (1-1) received 19 kills and 12 digs from sophomore Emily Steininger and 10 kills and 4 blocks from junior Camille Lazarratto in a 25-18, 26-28, 25-15 nonconference triumph.
