Cougars beat Chiefs 11-2

The Kane County Cougars scored 3 runs in the first inning and added 3 more in the second en route to an 11-2 victory over the Peoria Chiefs on Sunday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva. The game that was called because of rain after the bottom of the eighth.

Rock Shoulders gave the Cougars (54-80, 24-44) their initial lead in the bottom of the first when he singled with the bases loaded to score Gioskar Amaya. Chiefs starter Chris Perry (2-4) uncorked a wild pitch to bring home Brad Zapenas, and Jeimer Candelaio scored on Marco Hernandez’s hit for a 3-0 lead.

In the second after consecutive walks, Shoulders doubled to drive across Zapenas and Candelario and scored on a throwing error. In the fourth inning, Zapenas doubled and scored on an error, and Oliver Zapata delivered a 2-run single. Trevor Gretzky hit his first professional home run in the fifth.

Cougars starter and winning pitcher Nathan Dorris (7-3) worked 5 innings and allowed 1 run on 4 hits.

The Cougars conclude their season today when they host the Chiefs at 1 p.m. Right-hander Scott Baker (1-2) will make his final rehab start for the Cougars, opposing righty Silfredo Garcia (4-5).
