Schaumburg Boomers blast the Otters

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A night after clinching the Frontier League’s West Division championship in a tight contest, the Schaumburg Boomers forsook any drama in a 14-0 stomping of the Evansville Otters on Saturday.

In the eighth inning, the Boomers (57-35) exploded for 10 runs, matching a franchise record for runs in an inning, en route to their fifth shutout of the season — all on the road.

The Boomers’ Bobby Martin belted his first professional home run in the top of the first, Steve McQuail (3 RBI) drilled his 19th of the year in the fourth, a 2-run blast and Brian McConkey added 3 RBI.

Mike Giovenco worked 723 innings to snap his 3-start losing streak.

The Boomers, who have won three straight and boast the best road record in the league, shoot for a series sweep today at 5:05 p.m. when they send right-hander Tony Delmonico (1-1, 4.78 ERA) against righty RHP Robert Ramer (3-0, 2.89).

The Boomers open the playoffs at home Sept. 7 at 8 p.m.
