Illinois guard Karras will miss opener

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois says starting right guard Ted Karras will miss Saturday’s season opener against Southern Illinois.

Karras injured his left ankle in preseason practice and has been seen wearing a walking boot. Head coach Tim Beckman has not provided details about the injury, but sports information director Kent Brown said Thursday evening Karras will be out.

Linebacker Eric Finney will also be out. He was listed on the depth chart earlier this week as a possible starter.

Reserve defensive lineman Vontrell Williams, reserve offensive lineman Scott McDowell and reserve linebacker Ralph Cooper are also out.

A sixth Illinois player, reserve offensive lineman Tony Durkin, is out for the season.

Beckman has said he won’t discuss injuries until the Thursday before a game.
