Boomers clinch playoff berth

The Schaumburg Boomers became the first team in the Frontier League to secure a playoff slot this season courtesy of a 3-2 win over the host Evansville Otters on Friday, a victory which sewed up Schaumburg’s first-ever West Division title.

The Boomers (56-35) raced to a 3-0 lead for starter Chris Phelan, who went 6 23 innings en route to picking up his seventh win of the season.

Justin Vasquez tripled in the second inning and scored on a groundout by Michael Valadez. Sean Mahley extended the lead with a two-out, two-run double in the fifth.

Evansville would not go away, however, scoring runs in the fifth and seventh to claw within a run at 3-2.

Adam Tollefson came out of the bullpen and recorded a strikeout to leave the bases loaded in the seventh, helping pave the way to the win and Dexter Price worked the ninth for his 15th save.

Ÿ Playoff tickets are on sale now for the Boomers, who open the postseason at home on Sept. 7 at 8 p.m.
