INDIANAPOLIS -- State School Superintendent Glenda Ritz says Indiana residents and political leaders need to work together to "transform" education for all students.

The Democratic schools chief wrote in an open letter Tuesday that children across the state should expect an equal chance at a good education. She writes the Department of Education of has created a division of outreach to help schools get needed resources.

Ritz unseated former Republican School Superintendent Tony Bennett in last year's election. Her office opened a review of the state's school grading system earlier this month following an Associated Press report showing Bennett's grade-changing efforts.

Tension has built recently between Ritz and Republican Gov. Mike Pence over control of education policy in Indiana.
