Daily Illini ditches Friday print editions

URBANA, Ill. (AP) — The Daily Illini is ditching its Friday print edition.

The independent student newspaper at the University of Illinois will continue to publish articles on its website on Fridays but will do away with the print edition.

Editors say the change is part of a series of cost-cutting moves.

Darshan Patel, the paper’s editor-in-chief, told The (Champaign) News-Gazette that students often have a lighter class load on Fridays, so they don’t pick up a print edition as often as they do on other days of the week.

The 142-year-old student newspaper is owned by Illini Media Co.

The company sold its building and is getting money from a per-semester fee paid by students.
