House GOP to gather to elect new leader

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois House Republicans will gather later this week to choose a new leader of their caucus.

The Thursday meeting at the Statehouse Inn in Springfield follows House Republican Leader Tom Cross’s announcement last week that he is stepping down from his post to run for treasurer.

Cross originally said he would stay in the post through October but gave the caucus the option of an earlier election. Cross has served as GOP leader since 2003.

Republican state Reps. Jim Durkin and Raymond Poe are both seeking to succeed Cross. With 47 Republican seats in the Democratic-controlled House, 24 votes are needed for a new leader to be elected.
