Boomers get crunched by Crushers

AVON, Ohio -- The Schaumburg Boomers were unable to complete a road sweep of the Lake Erie Crushers, falling 11-2 in the series finale Sunday.

The first-place Boomers (53-34), who own the best record in the Frontier League, finished 4-2 on their road trip and have 6½-game lead in the West Division. The Boomers' magic number is four with nine games left in the regular season


Russell Moldenhauer hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first to put the Crushers ahead. Lake Erie scored in seven different innings and collected 19 hits, the most allowed by the Boomers in franchise history.

The Boomers struggled against all-star Dave Middendorf, who carried a no-hitter into the fifth. The Boomers scored on an RBI single from Ty Nelson in the seventh and a solo homer from Steve McQuail in the ninth, his 18th of the year.

Mike Giovenco dropped his third straight start, allowing 6 runs in 5 innings.

The Boomers are off today before hosting the Frontier Greys in a three game series that begins Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Right-hander Tony Delmonico (0-1, 5.89 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Boomers against right-hander Jonathan Kountis (0-4, 6.
