Community invited to enter Scarecrow Contest

The Hoffman Estates Park District is inviting the community to enter its sixth annual Scarecrow Contest. The scarecrows will be displayed for judging at the Scarecrow Festival from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Vogelei Park, 650 W. Higgins Road.

The Scarecrow Contest is sure to bring out the best in creativity and creepiness with everything from the charmingly classic to the unimaginably ghoulish. There are three categories of judging: Family/Individual, Business and Community Organization. This contest is free to enter.

Businesses who submit a scarecrow to the contest may also set up a table to promote their business for just $20.

Scarecrows will be judged on originality, creativity and presentation. The winners in each category will receive a prize. The winner in the Business Category Scarecrow Contest will win a free business card-sized ad in the HEPD winter program guide which comes out on Nov. 15, and is delivered to every household in Hoffman Estates.

The park district will have hay bales available for just $3 on Friday, Sept. 13, for entries. Plus, a stake will be provided at the site along with another hay bale. For information about the contest, contact Jody Dodson at (847) 885-7500 or jdodson@heparks.org.

In addition to a whimsical scarecrow display, festivities will include a climbing wall, safety town exploration, crafts, snacks. Families are encouraged turn off all things electronic, get off the couch, come to the park and play. There is no admission fee for Scarecrow Festival. Visit heparks.org for information and to see a slideshow of past scarecrow contest entries.
