Des Plaines police to host citizen academy

The Des Plaines Police Department will host a 10-week Citizen Police Academy, from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 10, at the Des Plaines Police Station, 1418 Miner St.

According to Des Plaines Police Officer Michael Heidkamp, the fall session of the Citizen Police Academy will include an overview of the Des Plaines Police Department, Illinois Vehicle Code and Criminal Law instruction, tours of the police station and 911 Center, a date at the shooting range, a traffic stop practical, domestic dispute instruction, evidence gathering instruction and police 10-week course, which will culminate with a graduation ceremony/dinner on, Tuesday, Nov. 12. The police department will host another academy in the spring for those who are unable to attend the fall session.

“The academy provides an opportunity for citizens (and we are hoping to attract many young adults) to get an understanding of the Des Plaines Police Department and its role in the community. The majority of our classes will be held at the Des Plaines Police Station and will be limited to 16 participants,” Heidkamp said.
