Federation says school sports participation is up

A group of high school sports associations say student sports participation is up for the 24th consecutive year.

The National Federation of State High School Associations conducts a survey each year of all states and the District of Columbia. According to the results, more than 7.7 million students participated in sports during the 2012-2013 school year. That’s more than ever before.

Illinois kept its ranking as the state with the fourth highest sports participation, more than 330,000 students. The state came after Texas, California and New York.

The federation has been compiling statistics since 1971.
