Boomers earn series sweep

The Schaumburg Boomers swept away the visiting Traverse City Beach Bums by rallying from 2 runs down for a 5-3 victory Sunday before 3,846 fans.

Ryan Still flared a two-out, 2-run single into shallow center to drive home the first 2 runs of the game in the top of the second. The Boomers came back with a run in the fourth and took the lead with 3 runs in the fifth.

Steve McQuail tied the game with a double down the right-field line, scoring Sean Mahley. McQuail scored the go-ahead run on an infield single, and Bubba Dotson added an RBI single.

Chase Burch homered in the sixth for Traverse City, but the Boomers added an insurance run in the seventh.

Chris Phelan had his team-best 10th quality start, earning the win by allowing 3 runs in 623 innings. The all-star allowed 8 hits as the Boomers earned their eighth sweep of the season.

Mahley came on to pitch in the ninth and earned his third save. McQuail had 3 hits and scored three times.

The Boomers (49-32) remain in first place heading into a key six-game road trip following a day off Monday.

Schaumburg visits Southern Illinois on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Mike Giovenco (8-5, 3.79) will start for the Boomers opposite righty Preston Vancil (7-4, 3.86). The Boomers return home Aug. 27.
