Boomers split doubleheader against Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Playing a doubleheader for the second time on the road trip, the Schaumburg Boomers split with the Evansville Otters, winning the opener 2-1 before a 5-1 defeat in the nightcap.

Despite the loss in Game 2, the Boomers pulled into a tie for first in the West Division standings.

A tough day offensively saw the Boomers accumulate just 5 total hits.

Schaumburg scored both runs in the opener without a hit as Sean Mahley scored on a fielder’s choice in the fourth and came home with the winning run in the sixth on a Frank Pfister sacrifice fly.

The win was the sixth straight for the Boomers to match a team record. Schaumburg also won 12 of 13 and nine straight on the road, longest in the league this season.

Matt Kuna started and worked 413 innings, but Adam Tollefson earned the win and Mahley saved the game with a sliding catch in the outfield to end the contest.

Clark Labitan earned the save. Schaumburg did not have a hit until the fifth, a bloop single from Keith Werman.

The streaks came to a close in the second game as Evansville scored 4 runs in the second to erase an early 1-0 deficit.

Gerard Hall doubled to lead off the game and scored when Mahley singled. Evansville starter Robert Ramer settled in, recording nine consecutive outs.

Evansville batted around in the second against spot starter Tony Delmonico, who worked 3 innings on a pitch count in the defeat. Hall finished with 2 hits. Preston Hatcher worked 2 scoreless innings in the loss.

The Boomers (44-30) conclude their road trip Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Seth Webster (2-1, 2.21) starts for the Boomers, who return home Tuesday.
