Busy hands, sewing friends donate 1,824 items to charity

Northwest Suburban Sewing Friends did it again! During the 2012-2013 year this group of 60 women made and donated 1,824 items to charitable organizations.

The items donated consisted of pillow cases for Ronald McDonald House and Conkerr Cancer; dog beds for The Buddy Foundation; Linus quilts; cancer pillows and ditty bags for The American Cancer Society; veterans quilts; bibs for Clearbrook; bed pads for Hospice care; and kitten blankets for the Almost Home Foundation. A request was received to make small bags to secure alarms to wheel chairs. Within a few days 45 bags were delivered.

Meetings include knowledgeable speakers, who provide a wealth of information covering various topics related to needle arts. All meetings devote time to “show and tell.” During this part of the meeting, many ideas are generated and a host of problems are solved by members.

Every year the group sponsors a bus trip. This year’s trip will be to Princeton. Members also enjoy a local field trip to either a quilt shop or a fashion fabric store.

Last June, the Kingswood Methodist Church, Buffalo Grove, offered its facility for a group “sew-in.” Twenty-seven women participated, lunch was provided by the organization and at the end of the day, 283 items were ready for donation.

A “challenge” is presented at the end of each year for completion over the summer. Members will return quilt blocks at the September meeting. This endeavor will generate 12 quilts for Project Linus.

The first meeting of the 2013-2014 year will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, at the Palatine Library, 700 N. Court, Palatine.
