Cougars belt 3 homers in win over LumberKings

CLINTON, Iowa — Kane County smashed 3 home runs in the first three innings as the Cougars earned a 6-1 triumph over the Clinton LumberKings on Saturday night at Ashford University Field in the opener of a four-game series.

Rock Shoulders walked to begin the top of the second and scored on a 2-run homer by Willson Contreras. Two batters later, Giuseppe Papaccio hit his first pro homer as the Cougars (44-62, 14-26) took a 3-0 lead.

In the third, Oliver Zapata doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Jeimer Candelario’s sacrifice fly. Shoulders walked again with two outs and Marco Hernandez hit a 2-run homer to stake the Cougars to a 6-0 lead.

Cougars starter Starling Peralta (1-0) pitched 5 scoreless innings, allowing 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Reliever Sheldon McDonald worked 2 innings and allowed a run. Michael Hamann recorded the final six outs.

The Cougars and LumberKings play Game 2 of their series today at 2 p.m. Right-hander Jose Rosario (0-7) will start for the Cougars against lefty Scott DeCecco (8-7).
