Free backpacks for kids in need

The Outreach Fellowship Christian Center is holding its inaugural Back to School Rally: School Supplies for Kids beginning at noon Saturday at the center, 14N690 Route 25, East Dundee.

This event helps ensure students receive backpacks and activities are free for residents. There will be food, entertainment, and the backpacks will be filled with school supplies.

Charity game raises more than $4,000: The 3rd Annual Sean Toedman 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, held in late June in East Dundee, managed to raise $4,276.55 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is nearly $1,000 more than last year’s total, according to David Schultz, who organized the tournament.

The tournament was named after Sean Toedman, a 12-year-old boy from unincorporated Cook County near Elgin, who died of brain cancer in 1996.

There were 37 teams this year, up from 11 teams in 2012. They included four teams in the women’s division, four teams in the men’s rec division, and 29 teams in the men’s championship. It marked the tournament’s first year with women’s and recreation divisions.

Organizers hope to grow the tournament in 2014 by adding teams to existing divisions and by adding new divisions, including one for middle school students and another for players 50 and older.

As it turned out, the champions who won the first tournament walked away with the title again during the most recent event.

The championship team was led by team captain Paul Kowalyszyn, Streamwood High School’s new head coach and a 2004 Larkin High graduate, and had Dayvon Ellis (2006 Larkin alum), Chris Oates (2004 Streamwood High School alum) and Vince Humphries (Fenwick High School alum and ex-Valparaiso University player).

They beat last year’s champs, Dundee Crown 2009, in the semifinals and FOE out of Elgin in the finals.

If you couldn’t make it to the tournament and would still like to support the cause, you can send an email to Schultz at davidschultz45@gmail.com.
