CTA redesigns train car interiors
The Chicago Transit Authority is revamping its subway cars.
The transit agency said Friday that the newly redesigned cars will join the rail fleet starting in 2016. The city could ultimately order as many as 846 of the cars at a cost of $2 billion.
Officials said the new seating design will include forward- and aisle-facing seats. The aisle seats will be in the front of the car, where passengers are more likely to stand.
They’ll replace the oldest cars in the CTA’s fleet, which are about 30 years old.
CTA President Forrest Claypool said in a statement that the redesigned cars will limit mechanical breakdowns and save money on operating costs. They’re also expected to make it easier for travelers to get on and off trains.
