Edwardsville stops Elk Grove downstate

Elk Grove suffered a setback in its first game of the American Legion baseball state tournament Wednesday in downstate Trenton, falling 8-1 to Edwardsville.

Red Sox coach Kevin Miller said the score was deceptive, as the game was tied 1-1 through seven innings behind a strong pitching performance from Elk Grove’s Danny Guido. But Edwardsville broke through with a 5-run eighth inning to take command.

Elk Grove (29-7) advances to an 11 a.m. Thursday contest against tournament host Trenton, which fell to Moline 11-0 on Wednesday.

Alex Tinkoff will start for the Red Sox, who figure to have better odds against Trenton (14-18) in the tournament’s double elimination format.
