The trial continues today for Yancarlo Garcia, the man accused of throwing a fire extinguisher from the top floor of a parking deck in August 2011 down onto a homeless man below — ultimately killing him. School board members discussed the strategic plan of Community Unit District 300 at its meeting last night. The Carpentersville-based district’s goals include curriculum, educator and administrator accountability, school environment, fiscal stability and communication, both internal and external. Dog bite settlement draws $1.125 million

A 17-year-old Zion boy who was attacked by a 120-pound Bullmastiff while riding his bike was awarded a $1.125 million settlement. The dog pulled the teen off his bike and continued to attack until a neighbor used a lit cigarette to burn the dog’s nose. Full story.

Construction continues on Route 45 between East Lake-Cook Road and IL Route 83. Resurfacing work is expected to continue through Nov. 15th. Traffic is reduced in that area to one lane in each direction. Full traffic.

Former Cubs pitcher drowns in lake

Frank Castillo, a former Cubs pitcher, drowned in an Arizona lake yesterday northeast of Phoenix. The 44-year-old jumped off a pontoon boat to go swimming and never resurfaced. Castillo had an 82-104 record in 13 seasons in the major leagues. Full story.
