I was looking for an area with a clean and simple background, making these heavy lifters dominate the image. The McClure family, of South Elgin, all donned capes for the event, which they have participated in for the past five years. Jennifer lost her aunt to lung cancer. Relay for Life events bring me to tears every time I cover them, as cancer has affected my family as well. So this little moment brought me a smile and helped lighten my heart for a few seconds. The photo was published in the weekly Perspective column.
