The Gateway Grizzlies scored 3 runs in the first and never trailed in a 10-3 win over the host Schaumburg Boomers in the opener of a key series on Thursday night.

The Boomers were able to plate single runs in the second and third to claw within 3-2. Alexi Colon drove a double to left in the second, plating Brian McConkey with the first run. Sean Mahley doubled home Chad Mozingo in the third.

Mozingo saw his 14-game hitting streak, longest by a Boomers player this season, come to an end in the defeat.

Gateway's Jon Myers connected on a 3-run homer in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2. Tucker Jensen tossed eight innings for the West Division leading Grizzlies, retiring 11 in a row from the fourth through the eighth.

Matt Kuna suffered the defeat, allowing a season-high 6 runs in 5 innings.

Edwin Carl, signed before the game, worked 2 scoreless innings in his Schaumburg debut. Mahley and McConkey posted 2 hits each in the loss.
