Lombard trustee eyes House primary bid

By Mike Riopell

Lombard village Trustee Peter Breen Tuesday announced a Republican primary bid for the Illinois House that pits him against veteran state Rep. Sandra Pihos of Glen Ellyn.

"We are long overdue for legislators who will put an end to the failed policies that have driven up income taxes while our wages fall and raised our property taxes while our home values decrease," Breen said in a statement released Tuesday that didn't reference Pihos by name.

Pihos serves the 48th District, which includes parts of Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Downers Grove, Villa Park and Lisle.

A Pihos spokesman said she plans to run again.

"She really has the experience and the resolve to get things done," said spokesman John Pastuovic.

Breen has been a Lombard trustee since 2011 and served as acting mayor for several months after the death of Bill Mueller last year.

Four years ago, he announced a race for Illinois House, but he eventually stepped back.

Breen works as an attorney with the Thomas More Society, a Chicago-based legal group that has championed anti-abortion causes and fought against same-sex marriage.

Pihos is a former teacher who has served in the Illinois House for 10 years and didn't face a 2012 election opponent.
