Downers Grove couple died of stab wounds

By Jake Griffin

A Downers Grove couple found dead in their home Friday died from stab wounds, DuPage County Coroner Rich Jorgenson said Saturday after autopsies had been completed.

Police have yet to release any additional details into the investigation other than the deaths of Thomas F. Smith, 41, and Jennifer M. Smith, 39, appear to be a domestic-related incident.

Police found the bodies in the house on the 6200 block of Park Avenue Friday afternoon while responding to a well-being check.

Neighbors said the Smiths were quiet and kept to themselves but were never a problem to anyone in the neighborhood.

Many neighbors expressed concern about the couple's preteen daughter.

Downers Grove Police Lt. Mike Willison said the girl was "fine and with family." The girl was not at home at the time of her parents' deaths, he said.

The Smiths purchased the 3,300-square foot home in 2004, according to public records.

Willison said the deaths remain under investigation and no more information was available Saturday.
