I took this photo using my iPhone in the Super Target parking lot on the spur of the moment. My son I were doing the McHenry County Audubon spring bird count in May. As we entered Sterne’s Woods in Crystal Lake, the Blue Jay ruckus in the tree tops was ear piercing. We walked about 200 feet down the path and heard a lone Blue Jay distress call on the ground followed by a screech! There on the ground, taking refuge in the thickets, was this Eastern Screech Owl. My son crawled on the ground to capture the bird in hiding. James J. Strzelinski of Crystal Lake
