HAMMOND, Ind. -- Authorities say police divers have found the body of a 50-year-old Blue Island man who went missing in Lake Michigan while boating with friends off the northwestern Indiana shore.
The Coast Guard says searchers located Michael Janko late Thursday nearly seven hours after a boater reported he had disappeared while swimming about a quarter mile from a beach in Hammond.
The boater told emergency workers that Janko jumped into the water then resurfaced but was unresponsive. Another swimmer grabbed onto him, but couldn't keep hold of him and he went back under the water. He wasn't wearing a life jacket.
The Coast Guard says rescue crews used a helicopter and boats with sonar to search more than 40 square nautical miles for Janko.
