Don't call it marriage for same-sex couples

The following is from a letter I sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on July 2:

You should be ashamed to call yourself a Catholic and a Christian when you support same-sex marriage and march in the Pride Parade. Homosexuality is sinful and abnormal behavior that should not be condoned and encouraged by passing laws that grant them the same rights as heterosexual married couples.

From Genesis we read: The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him' ... Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of man.' For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

This is the first marriage and it is between a man and woman. We can conclude from this account in Genesis that marriage is God's idea, designed and instituted by the Creator. In these verses we also discover that at the heart of God's design for marriage are companionship, intimacy and procreation. A union between same-sex couples should never be called marriage.

If you need to have this relationship made legal, then call it a civil union, but do not bestow upon that union any benefits or rights that a heterosexual marriage has. It is shameful that the entertainment industry promotes homosexuality in the majority of today's films and television programs. From these promotions, one would think that half our population was homosexual. That is certainly not the case.
