No bond for Chicago grandmother in 8-year-old’s death

A 51-year-old Chicago woman is being held without bond for the strangulation and beating death of her 8-year-old granddaughter.

Helen Ford is charged with first-degree murder for the death of Gizzell Ford, whose body was found Friday in a home on the city’s West Side.

Two other children in the home were taking into protective custody and the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services is investigating.

The Chicago Sun-Times says Ford was sniffling and whimpering when she appeared in court on Sunday.

Assistant state’s attorney Amanda Pillsbury says the girl had maggots in cuts on her body and authorities found a pole, twine and cables in the home, some of which had blood on them.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Ford had an attorney.
