Boy rescued from sand dune in Chicago hospital

CHICAGO — Officials say an 8-year-old boy rescued after being buried in a sand dune at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is being treated at a Chicago hospital.

He partially fell into a hole and then got trapped under 11 feet of sand before rescuers managed to pull him out on Friday.

Lakeshore Ranger Bruce Rowe says it took a crew using heavy excavating equipment more than three hours to pull the boy out of a dune known as Mount Baldy.

The boy was taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health Medical Center in Indiana. But he was later flown to a Chicago hospital.

Rowe says he was told the boy had vital signs, but didn't know his condition. Officials didn't immediately release the boy's name or hometown.
