'World War Z' author Max Brooks visits Harper

By Dann Gire

Novelist/actor Max Brooks came to Palatine's Harper College campus Friday night to talk all things zombie during a presentation at the Performing Arts Center.

He is the author of the book "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie Wars," now a Hollywood movie starring Brad Pitt.

A full-scale "zombie flash mob" preceded his 7 p.m. speech, with students and other audience members given undead makeup by local makeup artist and horror actress Kelli Tidmore.

The flash mob was engineered by Judi Brownfield, who every year launches a mock zombie attack called the "Nightmare on Chicago Street" in downtown Elgin.

Brooks is the son of entertainment icons Mel Brooks and the late Anne Bancroft.
