White Sox trade Thornton to Red Sox

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Boston Red Sox have acquired reliever Matt Thornton and cash from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league outfielder Brandon Jacobs.

The Red Sox announced the move during Friday night’s game at Oakland. To make room for Thornton on the 40-man roster, Andrew Miller was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Miller is expected to have surgery soon to repair a damaged left foot ligament and likely will be out for the season.

Thornton is 0-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 40 games with the White Sox this season. His addition gives Boston’s bullpen another lefty besides Craig Breslow.
