Firefighter who died in Arizona returns to suburbs

Firefighters from the Chicago area and Wisconsin gathered last night at Waukegan Regional Airport to honor Anthony Rose, one of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots to perish while battling an Arizona wildfire. Rose lived in Beach Park and Wadsworth before moving to Arizona. An urn containing his cremated remains arrived at the airport from Arizona about 8:15 p.m. Full story.

Stevenson High: Letter offering extra credit for cash was fake

It’s likely a few Stevenson High School students will be disappointed to find out that a letter circulating on social media that announced they could get extra credit points or test exemptions by making a monetary donation to the school was just a prank. The letter, which appeared to be on official Stevenson High School letterhead, was dated July 8 and signed by a fake administrator. Full story.

Itasca dad wins CBS baking competition

With popcorn-topped meringue pavlovas, mascarpone blueberry tartlettes and a peanut butter mousse-filled cake roll, Itasca’s Brian Emmett proved last night he’s America’s best amateur baker. Emmett won $250,000 and a contract to publish his own cookbook after winning “The American Baking Competition,” CBS’s elimination style reality show. Full story.

North Aurora police: Man beat relative, fired shotgun into ceiling

A 45-year-old man was charged with beating a relative with a shotgun and firing the gun into a ceiling during a domestic attack in North Aurora Tuesday night, according to police and court records. Gregory R. Bishop, of the 100 block of Grace Street, North Aurora, faces up to seven years in prison on the most serious charge of possession of a weapon by a felon. Full story.

World War II vet from Mt. Prospect remembered for his humor

Longtime Mount Prospect resident John B. Donato was the kind of person it was almost impossible to dislike, relatives say. “He was so magnetic,” said his sister-in-law, Barbara Donato. “I’ve never known anyone not to like him. He just had that personality — always had a smile, always wanted to help.” Donato, a World War II veteran and retired optician, died on July 6 at the age of 88. Full story.

DuPage secures state money for roads

DuPage County will receive $3.65 million from the Illinois Department of Transportation to help pay for four major road projects. County board members, who approved four separate pacts with IDOT this week, say the extra money ensures projects along 55th Street, 75th Street, Fabyan Parkway and Gary Avenue will proceed as planned. Traffic

The Lake County Division of Transportation will be closing Miller Road from IL Route 59 to US Route 12 beginning Monday, July 22. The roadway will be closed for 90 days. People should use Kelsey Road to U.S. Route 59 for a detour. More traffic.
