Police: Elgin man 'brutally' stabbed woman, her boyfriend

A Crystal Lake woman and her boyfriend were stabbed multiple times early yesterday morning in what police described as a domestic situation. An arrest warrant has been issued for Jimmy Bell Jr., 30, of Elgin, on two counts of attempted murder. Police say Bell is the ex-boyfriend of the female victim. Full story.

Convicted Darien killer set for August sentencing

A man who admitted killing three members of a Darien family during a March 2010 attack will be sentenced on Aug. 13, a DuPage County judge said yesterday. Jacob Nodarse, 26, pleaded guilty but mentally ill and faces 45 years to life for shooting three members of the Kramer family. Full story.


Expect another unseasonably cool day with highs in the upper 60s and mostly cloudy skies. Some areas might see a few isolated showers, but according to the forecast this will be the last cool day before a holiday warm up on Thursday.


All area roadways are clear early this morning. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, all nonessential road work will end by noon today to make way for holiday travel and will resume on Monday. Traffic report.

New law requires schools to hold shooting drills

Starting in the 2013-14 academic year, all school districts in the state will have to hold drills to prepare for scenarios where a shooter gets in the building. But they don't have to include students in the drill. Full story.

Lake County treasurer won't run again

They may not immediately recognize his name, but Lake County property owners are reminded each year when the tax bill comes that Robert Skidmore is the county treasurer. However, that won't be the case after his fourth term comes to an end, as Skidmore has decided not to seek re-election in November 2014. Full story.

Northrop Grumman celebrates America Day

A Black Hawk helicopter landed at Northrop Grumman yesterday to celebrate the company's annual America Day celebration. The Rolling Meadows company provides systems, products and solutions in aerospace, electronics, information systems and technical services to government and commercial customers. Full story.

Thome back with White Sox

Former slugger Jim Thome rejoins the White Sox as an assistant to General Manager Rick Hahn. While he hasn't "officially" retired, Thome played 22 major-league seasons, most recently with the Baltimore Orioles last year. The Peoria native was with the White Sox from 2006-09. Full story.
