Fire chief needs more accountability

I read with disgust the article regarding the Round Lake Area fire captain placed on unpaid leave.

Anyone with any knowledge of the Round Lake Fire Department understands that Chief Maplethorpe has a personal vendetta against Whitten and does not want Whitten to replace him once he retires. Maplethorpe has been chief for far too long and has created a kingdom for himself with taxpayers’ money.

The district trustees that oversee his position were hand-picked and recommended by Marplethorpe himself. Due to that fact, Maplethorpe has no supervision or accountability to the taxpayers.

Round Lake would be better served by switching to an elected District board. Doing so would keep their chief under control while preventing him from serving his own special interests.
